If you are looking for a designer watch on the more expensive side of the market, you may be suspecting that you will find a lot of sparkle and décor. The Cartier Tank Americaine 18kt White Gold Ladies Watch W2601956 does not match with a glittery idea of glamour. The truth is that high-end watches come in many different styles, and they feel no need to pack themselves with jewels and golden ordinates to show their style and sophistication.

Cartier’s Tank Americaine watch has a slim look, managing to be sharp and soft at the same time, with a rectangular white gold case that features rounded corners. The way the alligator strap begins at the top of the face of the watch, rather than at the top of the case, gives the timepiece a fluid form. Roman numerals flow around the dial, which also takes the shape of a rounded rectangle. Cartier themselves refer to the watch as a reminder of a style from the 1930s, and in that aged-yet-modern way, the watch gives off some class while not feeling plainly classic.

Some looking at watches in this price range may be looking for the diamonds, gems and yellow gold of a long-ago aristocrat, but some may just be looking for a little bit more shine. There are many other watches that offer their buyer diamonds to count and showoff to others. The Tank Americaine W2601956 has a different sort of audience in mind and for the most part it pulls off a very cohesive look. One odd mistake in design is how the slim shape of the watch causes the roman numerals on the dial to become squished in at the sides. At a first glance, it is hard to tell the different between seven o’clock and eight o’clock as they are both a bunched V and I. Regular numbering or a smaller text for the roman numerals might have been a better choice. Outside of this mishap, Cartier’s Tank Americaine is a styling success. The real question is if the high price fits you as a buyer

I must say that blue is not a color I think of when I think to myself of an upper tier watch and Cartier seems to disagree. Perhaps they know many people like the color blue and in that they are right. If you want a high-end watch and you want it to be blue—and not jazzy blue, but popping blue—then Cartier has the Pasha Women’s Watch model WJ123121.

The powder blue of the Pasha watch can be found in the face of the watch and even the leather strap. The strap has a lizard-like scaling to its texture that brings to mind a neon fluorescent light shining upon the tail of a pet chameleon. The watch has a generally poppy feel, but not an entirely modern look. At first glance, it may look like it belongs to the 1980s or 1990s. The numerals on the watch catch your eye right away with big and fun 3, 6, 9 and 12 in Arabic styling.

Looking beyond the pop look of the watch, some true high materials can be found. The Pasha’s case is 18k white gold, and the crown is as well 18k white gold with a diamond. Eight round-cut diamonds also appear around the dial of the watch between the large Arabic numerals. Time is kept by high quality quartz movement and the window protecting the blue dial and diamonds is scratch-resistant sapphire.  Other features of the watch are more of the standard variety, including water resistance to a depth of 30m and the ability to interchange straps with Cartier’s other strap choices available for this line of watches.

If you like the look of the watch, but aren’t sure about the chosen blue color, then you may want to try out the other Pasha models that Cartier have. Some increase the glitter to even greater levels, but hold back on the color end.

The parts of the Cartier Pasha WJ123121 are nice, but it’s hard to see the high-end at first glance. This watch may just be case of the look overshadowing the parts.

Once in a while, I see one of those old open-top roadsters rolling around town or puttering through the curves of ocean-cliff roads of California. They call back to a time of racing goggles and long, flowing fenders. The Cartier Roadster Quartz Women’s Watch WE500160 takes on a look that hopes to send you back in time to that road-race era. Like those classic cars, it has a style that mixes the wooden and the luxurious.

While Cartier likes to compare its Roadster watch to the 1950s streetcar sort, the 18k yellow gold case and round-cut diamond filled bezel will make you think of an old Cadillac with a tooting horn more than a middle-class Chevy roadster. The crocodile skinned leather strap has a crinkly brown to it that might make you think of the wood doors of some classic cars. Adding to the luxurious, open-top reference of the styling is another round-cut diamond in the crown.

To stand the test of time, the Cartier Roadster using high quality quartz movement to keep accurate and precise time and the window covering for the white face of the dial is a scratch-resistant sapphire. Other styling touches are roman numerals around the analog dial, with a date of the month window replacing the 3 o’clock position.

Cartier pulls off their roadster feel for this model, the WE500160’s brown leather strap more effectively giving a stick-shift ad top-down feel than some of the other color and strap choices in the Roadster line. It is nice to find a racing inspired watch for Women when so many of these car inspired watches are designed for the male buyer. Perhaps, by going back a little further in time, Cartier has retained a high sense of elegance with the Roadster line that may be loss if the watch became too sporty.

If class and speed are what you are looking for in the look of your watch, then the Cartier Roadster has it at if you are willing to spend.

For a stylishly organized look, consider the Cartier Pasha 42 mm XL Men’s Watch W3109255. Its silvered opaline dial has Arabic numerals marking the hours and thin black dashes indicating the half hours along its round outer edge. In the center, a guilloché square overlays bisecting lines that connect some of the hour markers, neatly dividing the remaining space up to contain another set of numerals: 3, 6, and 9 in larger print and a date display at 12 o’clock. You may notice that the trademark blued-steel hour hand doesn’t reach outside the center square, but it is easily lined up with another set of marks along the edge of the square, where the bold marks correspond with the numeral hour markers.

The most interesting feature on this watch, hands down (if you’ll pardon the pun), is the day/night disk at the bottom of the guilloché square. It tracks the relative position of the sun or moon in the sky according to what time it is and adds a sense of perspective to the simple act of glancing at the clock.

This is an extra-large model, with a 42 millimeter (1.65 inch) stainless steel case. The back of the case, like the face, is set with scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, revealing the automatic winding caliber 8011 MC movement. When you imagine to yourself a fine, classical watch, there may have two general visions in your mind. Going with the Cartier means you know the materials are all high quality, but there still may be some personal drawbacks for a buyer. The gold casing around the face is rather wide and thick for the watch, with an opening for adjusting the time. This makes the watch look heavy and in this way, it may be too thick to register as elegant for some tastes. Cartier’s W900156 is certainly less delicate than some watches that fall on the side of being an accessory and a piece of jewelry.

In the end, I find the Cartier Ballon Bleu W6900156 to be a price and style choice. The most distinguishing feature may be the combined look of roman numerals touched by sapphire hands. I am not sure that sets it apart from others as much as the luxury quality parts do, but then it becomes a debate of how luxurious of a watch you want.

The Cartier Ballon Blue W6920047 Medium Unisex Watch is classical and unique, gold and steel, straight-edged and curved, made for men and women alike. I’m a very visual person, so I was instantly drawn to this watch for those first three combinations and the intriguing splash of blue right in the middle of it all.

Look at this luxury watch. The silvered opaline round dial has a circle of Roman numeral hour markers, and an inner circle of tiny minute markers. The 3 hour mark and the nearby minute marks are pushed towards the center in a gentle bulge by another circle, this one orbiting protectively around a crown of 18k yellow gold with a blue synthetic cabochon gemstone. No sharp edges – unless you count the sword-shaped hour, minute, and second hands of blued steel.

As for the wristband, the first three inner links on either side of the watch face are also yellow gold. The rest is stainless steel with a hidden deployment clasp, making it simple to put on or take off. Between the band and the clasp, this watch is going to feel secure on your wrist.

An internet search will quickly tell you that the Ballon Bleu W69009Z3 is a men’s watch, the Ballon Blue W6920047 is a unisex watch, and the Ballon Blue W69007Z3 is a women’s watch. They all have the same design; the Cartier website just lists them as large, medium, and small models. The prices vary with size, naturally, because the smaller watch the fewer materials used.

The starting price for this model is $8200, which is expensive. You can save a few thousand by opting for the Ballon Blue W69011Z4, a medium model watch that doesn’t have the flash of yellow gold on it, but if price is a big deterrent then this probably isn’t the collection to browse. Because the Ballon Bleu W69009Z3 doesn’t have date or chronograph features, you might want to think long and hard about whether this luxury watch has enough functional bang for your buck.

A new feature we see in the W3109255 is the addition of the sophisticated day/night disk, which sits in the square guilloche of the clock face. It tracks the sun and moon through the sky, changing positions on your watch in time to the hour. This clever feature is offset by the traditional day/date disk above the guilloche.
